The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water: Review

Returning to the big-screen a whole eleven years after his first outing; The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water, finds the sponge that lives under a pineapple under the sea, getting the quasi-live-action treatment. Marketed heavily on the basis of the cartoon characters entering our world, it plays more like an extended episode with a few live-action moments thrown in here and there. The ‘story’ is as strange as ever, as the town of Bikini Bottom falls into post-apocalyptic chaos, when the secret recipe for their beloved Krabby Pattie is stolen. The culprit? The half-pirate, half-chef, Burger-Beard, played by the ever enthusiastic Antonio Banderas. As SpongeBob and his gang of friends try to find the recipe, they go on an adventure involving time travel, superheroes and a flying, talking dolphin named Bubbles, who shoots lasers out of his blowhole.

As I’ve never really seen any episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, I really had no idea what to expect with this feature length instalment. It may sound like damning with faint praise, but I didn’t find it anywhere near as annoying as I thought it was going to be. It’s continually chucklesome throughout, although never it never reaches the giddying heights of hilarity that I’d hope for. As far as I’m aware, the humour is very much the same as the show; anarchic, silly, and a little trippy. There’s nothing in it that really makes it stand out though, and I found myself struggling to think of any real laugh out loud moments, just moments after leaving the film. I’m sure fans of the show will love it; I certainly didn’t hate it, but I didn’t really take to it either. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge out of Water is simply a middle of the road family movie, that will pass the time over the coming bank holidays, but which you’ll instantly forget about afterwards. Viewer beware though; the live-action aspect that has been heavily suggested is lacking to say the least. Perhaps a better subtitle would have been Sponge out of Water, for about fifteen minutes.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water is previewing this weekend and is out everywhere March 27th.
