Epic is a bold title for any film let alone for an animation made by the same studios that brought us the Ice Age films.
It tells the story of Mary Katherine, who when her mother dies, attempts to re-build a relationship with her reclusive scientist father. Once she arrives at his house in the middle of nowhere its not long before she is shrunk and is transported into a world where good and evil fight for the fate of the forest.
Epic doesn’t earn it’s title in the slightest and barely deserves more than a paragraph on it. It’s not a terrible film and is certainly better than the Ice Age films but it didn’t blow me away either.
What it has going for it is a classic story of good vs evil and some funny moments throughout, mainly thanks to mub and grub, a slug and a snail played by Aziz Ansari and Chris O’Dowd.
The animation is of a good standard and there are stunning moments of imagination at the beginning of the film. Sadly it doesn’t last all the way through.
I’d still suggest taking your children or nephews and nieces to see it, they’ll no doubt enjoy it but otherwise I’d recommend renting it when it’s released in the next few months.
