Episode VII: The Needless Return of the Jedi

George Lucas. George. Bloody. Lucas.

Like Marmite I don’t know whether to love him or hate him. On the one hand he came up with Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark but on the other hand, I can’t help but blame him for everything that’s wrong with those franchises. He’s the one who wanted a dark Indiana Jones, The Crystal Skull and came up with Jar Jar Binks (to name but a few) and I’m not sure I can forgive him for all of this.

Now he’s gone and secured himself a nice retirement by signing a landmark deal with Disney who have bought Lucasfilm and all the films under it’s production for $4.05 Billion.

When I heard this news it pissed me off to be honest. Disney have already announced Episode VII for 2015 and there’s already talk of an Indiana Jones re-boot which considering I just bought “the complete adventures” set adds insult to injury.

I’m sure there’s a lot of people who are happy with the prospect of a new Star Wars but I say leave it alone. The prequels were shocking lets face it and no other Star Wars has come close to being as good as Empire Strikes Back in my eyes. In fact I’d say it’s the only really enjoyable one out of all of them. I know this may seem like sacrilage, bad mouthing one of the most popular franchises in film but I just have so many issues with the Star Wars films.

I mean setting up the Empire as such a powerful enemy only to have them pretty much destroyed by a bunch of Ewoks!! I can’t help but thinking Lucas’ heart wasn’t in the right place when making these films, thinking more about the merchandise than anything else.

Having said all this, there is a silver lining as the new Star Wars will have minimal involvement from Lucas and whereas I’d much rather see more original films being made, it would be quite interesting to see a Neill Blomkamp Star Wars, a Duncan Jones Star Wars, hell even give Spielberg a shot at it.

I just hope Disney go in a fresh an interesting direction with it. Forget Vader, the Empire and Luke. Get a fresh set of charcters from another galaxy far far away who have to deal with an even scarier and biggger threat than the Empire.

Providing they go down this route and Leave Indiana Jones alone, this deal could in fact be Star Wars’ saving grace, I could still become a super fan yet.

Also worth mentioning is Willow! Now that is a re-boot I would love Disney to have a crack at.
